The only book of its kind, "Glass: An Artist's Medium" is perfect for artisans, art teachers, gallery owners, and every lover of art. Gorgeous!, April 21, 2002
Reviewer: jillsjoy from St. Louis, MO United States
Kohler's book is a beautiful compilation of hot glass techniques. Beginning with a brief history of this centuries-old craft, she then discusses various methods of forming hot glass, presenting them first with an artist's appreciation, and then with simple explanations/directions to imitate the featured technique. The book is richly illustrated and inspiring--I found myself marking several pages with technique I wanted to try.

This book steps inside Simpson's studio and provides an intimate look at the inspirations, experiences and techniques Simpson uses to create his wondrous glass worlds. Readers will witness first-hand the drama of hot glass processes and learn many of the small technical secrets that elevate his art beyond the ordinary. Dazzling photographs of Simpson's work complement this behind-the-scenes glimpse into his creative genius.

Beautiful book, next best thing to being there., October 20, 2001
Reviewer: George D. Girton from Los Angeles, CA USA
Andrew Chaikin describes exactly how Josh makes a megaplanet, a challenging process illustrated with some of the most evocative photographs of molten glass you can imagine. That's interesting enough as it is, but the second part of the book, where you can clearly see Josh's artistic imagination at work, and almost hear him talk as he writes in a warm, autobiographical voice, is intriguing. This book comes as close as you can get to being in Josh Simpson's brain and seeing the images in the world which inspire his glass art, and then actually visiting Josh Simpson's studio to see him create it

William Morris: Animal/Artifact

by James Yood, Tina Oldknow et al
Hardcover: 272 pages

Chihuly: Seaforms

by Joan Robinson et al
Hardcover: 112 pages

Book Review:
Ingram

In "Chihuly: Seaforms," Artforum art critic Seeman Robinson discusses Chihuly's most exquisite and ethereal series, invoking the spontaneous automatic drawings of the Surrealists, the water lilies of Claude Monet, the action painting of Jackson Pollock, and Henri Matisse's "Swimming Pool." Oceanographer and explorer, Sylvia Earle, former chief scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, finds in Chihuly's evocative Seaforms not only "reflections of skill, passion, teamwork and sheer genius" but also "tributes" to the sea. The saturated color of the 4D full-color pages, including many double-page spreads, conveys the sensuousness of Chihuly's glass works and drawings.

The Essential Dale Chihuly

by William Warmus
Hardcover: 112 pages

Book Description
Dale Chihuly turns glass into art, artists into glassmakers, children into artists, and adults into children. Elton John has called him "The Picasso of 20th-century glass" and many hail him as the Tiffany of the 21st century. He has pioneered a technically demanding new art form that blends performance art, sculpture, and environments in the creation of spectacularly colorful worlds. His uplifting art possesses the edginess that only fragile glass born from blasting hot furnaces can inspire. The Essential(tm) Dale Chihuly is the book to read if you have zero tolerance for artspeak and a lively curiosity about what has made this glass artist so popular.

Chihuly: Persians

by Joan Robinson et al
Hardcover: 112 pages

Book Review:
Ingram
Classical Greece, Persia, Byzantium, the Islamic world, Venice and the art nouveau style can all be seen as sources for Chihuly's Persian series, argues art historian Tina Oldknow in "An Ancient Legacy," her insightful essay in "Chihuly: Persians." Oldknow reviews the accomplishments of Chihuly's artistic ancestors, from the anonymous makers of Egyptian cave-formed vessels to Louis Comfort Tiffany. Particular attention is paid to his search for new forms, by which the author suggests a comparison to Persian gardens and carpets.

Chihuly Projects

by Dale Chihuly et al
Hardcover: 364 pages

Book Review:
Voluptuous shapes in luscious color, Dale Chihuly's large-scale glass sculptures are all about immediate sensory experience. It's likely no book could capture the intoxication of being in the presence of clusters of glass forms that look like undersea life or tropical forests, hanging overhead or rising up from the floor in fabulous splendor.
Chihuly Projects offers 200 full-page photographs (in supersaturated color) of 34 installations the Seattle artist created over a 30-year span for public and private clients, plus chatty comments by the artist and members of his staff. A fine essay by the art writer Barbara Rose places Chihuly's work in the context of contemporary art and his own life. (An eye injury in the mid-'70s precipitated his shift from blowing individual tabletop glass pieces to becoming the director of a team effort.)

From the Publisher
For some thirty years, artist Dale Chihuly has dazzled critics and international audiences with his glass art. His genius has been both singular, in the extent to which he has stretched the glass medium itself, and plural, in his revolutionizing of the American studio glass movement. As a cofounder of the Pilchuck Glass School, north of Seattle, Chihuly's teaching and vision have led American artists who work with this magical medium to worldwide prominence, and glassblowing itself has risen to new heights of achievement and a respected place in the fine arts of this century. This revised and expanded second edition of Chihuly includes additional images that further illustrate the remarkable work and career of the world-renowned glass artist. In this first full-scale study of Chihuly's career to date, the distinguished art critic Donald Kuspit broadens our understanding of Chihuly's innovative and avidly sought-after work. Enhanced by superb new photographs of Chihuly's spectacular glass sculpture, Kuspit's essay explores the relationship of medium to artistry and craftsmanship, as well as the dynamics of the creative process.
