I
look to join a strong sense of design with objects that
are functional. I use lines and masses to create both
motion and balance. Much of my imagery is tied to my
background in ceramics and landscape design. My work
is often a
blend
of three-dimensional and two-dimensional aspects. My
primary material is Steel. I work up my designs on paper
and make stencils of the design so that I can cut out
the steel pieces for the work. These are welded together
and finished of by various sanding techniques - I dislike
and avoid highly reflective finishes. After the work
is welded together I use various treatments to bring
color to the surface of the work. To protect the finish
of the work a coat of Penetrol is applied to the surface
followed by several applications of an
acrylic
clear coat.
