In my work, the vessel is an object of containment, protection, or shelter. The mystique and secrets of the interior spaces inspire introspection, evoking images held in memory or encountered in reality. The exterior form of the vessel often contrasts with the inside, resulting in a dichotomy of spirit.

Creative influences are derived from landscapes, movements and objects observed in nature, poetry, and random voyages of the imagination.

I enjoy the physical process -of manipulating metal. Three-dimensional forms can be realized by the hammering and fabrication of flat sheet. Layers of chemicals applied to the metal result in a rich surface coloration.

Darlys Ewoldt was born in Denison, Iowa in 1955. She studied art at Drake University and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1977. She was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in metalsmithing from Indiana University in 1982. During the ensuing years, Ewoldt has lived and worked in Chicago. Currently, she teaches at Columbia College Chicago. Her work has been included in exhibitions and galleries throughout the United States, Australia, and Europe. She has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including Ford Foundation Fellowship and Project Grants, two Fellowship Grants from the Illinois Arts Council, and the Governor James R. Thompson Award for Excellence in Craft.
